Have You Heard the Call?
Excerpt from Chapter One: Armed for Prayer: A Strategic Guide to Victory
Did you hear the trumpet blast calling you into battle? Or perhaps it was the sound of the reporter’s voice blaring over the noise of the children, bringing devastating news of terrorized nations, riots in the cities, protests on college campuses, or drugs flowing unchecked into the country while leaving behind a trail of victims.
Whatever tugged at your heart and woke you up with an urgency to pray, you may have joined the ranks for a while, yet perhaps the strains of the call grew faint. You haven’t forgotten what you learned, but it’s more like a soldier’s faded photograph. Have you allowed the bomb shelling to deafen your spiritual ears because of backlash from the enemy? Let’s stir up the spirit within you as the Psalmist David did. “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance” (Psalm 42:5). Be encouraged and fan the flames once again. Recall Your previous triumphs and praise the Lord. If you’re a new recruit, come along and learn vital information for sustained victories...

Fast forward over twenty years. I believe that the call to pray has become even more urgent. And some have heard the call. 2 Chronicles 7:14 has become popular in Christian circles these days. “If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven and heal their land.” Notice the words: called by my name, humble, pray, and turn from their wicked ways. We who are called by His name are called to pray. Yet it takes humility to turn to God and pray. That’s where the battle begins. First with the flesh and then with the enemy of our souls: Satan. It’s a struggle at times to pray because we in America are very distracted and busy with a million other things. Some of them are good things for the Lord. However, if we’re not praying on a daily basis, we’re leaving ourselves open for an attack. Another issue is that many Christians don’t want to be convicted of their wicked ways, and Satan doesn’t want anyone to realize this. Unfortunately, many Christians just glide along the surface and never repent or receive the full benefits of consistent prayer: “righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:17). Yet the climate has changed, and many are awakening or reawakening to the need to pray. I hope this book will rouse you to get your prayer life in shape!
